Pensioner wins council’s first top neighbour award
POPULAR pensioner Ron Stone has been named as the best neighbour you could wish for.
Ron, 83, a sheltered housing resident, was nominated for a Good Caring Neighbour Award by fellow residents at Cockram Court, on Medgbury Road.
He is the first person to be crowned a good neighbour, for his selfless acts of kindness, as part of a council scheme to uncover hidden heroes among its tenants.
The council-led awards were launched this year to find people in the borough who go above and beyond the call of their neighbourly duties. Ron was the first person to win, but nominations are still open.
The 83-year-old was presented with his award by deputy mayor Councillor Teresa Page at a surprise coffee morning at Cockram Court on Thursday.
One of the nominations for him read: “Ron is a gentleman in his 80s, a kind and considerate man who is still busy helping others.
“Whether it is getting the morning paper, collecting a prescription or shopping for groceries, it is what he does and has been doing for many years for his neighbours.
“He will even bring them freshly cooked fish and chips on a Friday lunch time if he is asked.”
A resident at Cockram Court for more than 30 years, Ron has come to the aid of many of his neighbours in that time and often goes out to buy groceries for frail residents.
He also set up the hugely popular coffee mornings at Cockram Court, where he ensures the kitchen is stocked up and religiously puts out the cups and biscuits in the lounge. He also makes sure a cup of tea or coffee is given to residents within seconds of them arriving.
It was at the latest of the coffee mornings that councillor Page surprised him with the award.
Ron typically played down his actions after receiving the award .
He said: “This could have been given to so many who live here. They are all such wonderful people.”
Councillor Richard Hurley, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for public protection, housing and Streetsmart (delivery), said: “The efforts of a good neighbour like Ron are quite simply life changing.
“It is so important to celebrate such wonderful acts of kindness and generosity of spirit. Ron is a great example to all of us.”
