Sign up now for new UTC
DEMAND for places at a college being opened next September has soared and parents are being urged to register their interest before the fast approaching deadline. The University Technical College has already had more than 100 applications or declarations of interest from youngsters eager to get their place.
The UTC will be for students aged 14 to 19 and will have an initial intake of 300 pupils when in opens next year, with a further 300 the following September.
Principal Angela Barker-Dench said: “We have seen enormous interest from potential students and have received many applications already. “We strongly urge pupils interested in becoming part of our first intake to apply now.”
The UTC will see pupils focus on engineering courses, with local employers such as Honda helping to develop the curriculum.
In order to teach students the skills they will need when they leave education, the college will be run in a way similar to the workplace.
Angela said: “Studying hours at the UTC will be 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, with a 4.30pm finish on Fridays. “The aim is to mirror the typical engineering workplace and prepare students for life beyond study. “Similarly, there will be no homework other than exam revision, but students will be able to access their learning online for independent study.”
Representatives from the UTC and Oxford Brookes University, who are helping to develop the college, spent much of the summer touring the region to tell families about what they can expect at the college.
This tour has now finished but now they are visiting schools to speak with students directly. They have already been to Nova Hreod as well as Lavington School.
The college will be situated in Bristol Street, on the site of the old Great Western Rail School building. The land is owned Network Rail which has leased it to the college.
The Old School Building and the iconic Water Tower will be key features of the college. Both are Grade II listed structures and will be incorporated into the design, with the Water Tower being restored and brought into educational use. Work on the site is due to start in the coming weeks.
The deadline for the application is the January 31. For more information or to apply, visit www.utcswindon.co.uk.
