Santa squad ready to race for funding
A MERRY army of Santas is heading to Lydiard Park to raise funds to keep the region’s air ambulance flying.
Hundreds of fundraisers clad in cosy Father Christmas outfits and sporting long white beards are to take part in the Santa Fun Run in aid of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, December 1.
Organised jointly by the Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix and the air ambulance, the popular event launched last year.
Paul Parfrey, former club president, who oversaw last year’s charity race, urged families to don Santa suits and walk, jog or run the 5km course. He said: “The Wiltshire Air Ambulance needs our support more than ever this year.
“It costs £700,000 each year to cover the running cost of this critical helicopter, which any of us at any time may need to save a life.
“It doesn’t matter whether we have seasoned runners, joggers or walkers, young or old, or families out walking their dogs, we just want to see lots of people there on the day having fun”
Participants will have the opportunity to join a 15-minute Zumba warm-up led by Allie of Zumba Atomic before embarking on the challenge.
Club president Peter Collis said he hoped to beat last year’s fundraising total of £6,152.
He said: “The Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a great cause. Our Rotary Club was overwhelmed by the support and the funds raised last year, and because of the support of the Swindon community and local area, I am thrilled that our Rotary Club is able to support the charity for a second year. And this time we aim to raise in excess of the funds raised in 2012.
“It’s a spectacular sight to see all the Santa suits with the backdrop of the beautiful Lydiard Country Park.
“This is a family event and we are encouraging everyone to join in the Christmas spirit by getting involved.”
Adult places cost £15 and include a full Santa suit. Tickets for children aged between four and 15 are £5 and include a Santa hat. Those under four years old go free. Dogs on a lead are welcome.
Only 300 places are available. To register, go to www.swindonsanta.org.uk For more information about Wiltshire Air Ambulance visit www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk
