A tree to commemorate the birth of Prince George has been planted on The Green in Devizes.

The hornbeam was planted by the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton, and Devizes mayor, Pete Smith.

It was donated by Wiltshire Tree People, a non-profit making organisation.

Its chairman, Sir Thomas Morison, told those gathered at the planting ceremony that the tree was a gift to the town to replicate the gift to the country of Prince George.

The Lord Lieutenant said Devizes was one of her favourite places and she was always struck by how well-kept The Green is.

The Green is owned by Devizes Town Council.

Carole Berry, the council’s direct services manager, said: “It’s a very beautiful hornbeam.

“Where it’s positioned, on the verge coming round along Nursteed Road, is where the crocuses and spring bulbs come out, so it will look very attractive.”

A commemorative plaque will be put on the tree once it is established.
