A NEW state-of-the-art care home could soon be built in North Swindon to help cope with increasing demand for elderly care in the town.

An application has been put to the council to build a 73 bedroom home on land just off Salzgitter Drive, opposite the Jovial Monk Pub in St Andrew’s Ridge.

When completed it will be a specialist care home for residents with dementia and other learning disabilities. Developers Castleoak say the home will be built to the highest standards of dementia care.

Stirling University has developed a best practice guide for dementia services and the new care home will be designed to the standard it has set out.

There will be a colour coding system throughout the building and corridors will be extra wide so residents can receive the best possible care.

The land being used is included as part of a wider development which will see 450 new houses built as well as the redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium.

Land was set aside for the care home and the plans have been put together by Castleoak separately from the rest of the development, after getting positive feedback from a public consultation.

The consultation was held in July with 13 of the 14 residents who responded saying they were in favour of the care home.

Muhammad Hassan, Planning Manager at Castleoak said: “Every care home we design is bespoke, taking into account the unique characteristics of the site and local area. This home will deliver specialist dementia care accommodation with a high quality design befitting this prominent landmark location.

“We have proposed additional landscaping and trees around the site to ensure an attractive green edge to Salzgitter Drive.”

While developing the scheme the company carried out an assessment of the need for elderly care in Swindon.

As the town is set to expand, the company found there would be a significant increase in the need for elderly care.
