The green, green grass of Calne and the team that tends it have been put in the national spotlight.

Beversbrook Sports Facility has been named the IOG Grass Roots Sports Ground of the Year 2013 at an industry awards ceremony.

The prestigious Institute of Groundsmanship Industry Awards looks for achievement, innovation and fresh thinking from groundskeepers.

Although this is the first time the award has been given to Beversbrook, it has come to Wiltshire in the past, with Stanley Park in Chippenham winning the for last two years.

The award was presented to head groundsman Adam Witchell and facility manager Kevin Whitehorn in front of 350 expert groundsmen last week.

Mr Whitehorn said: “I think the community of Calne should be proud to have a fantastic facility on their doorstep, an award-winning facility we can now say.

“Credit goes to the ground staff – they are the ones that stay on at night time. Adam Witchell, the head groundsman, has worked past the call of duty.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of weather there is, they will be out there. If it’s raining or wet they will be there with their waterproofs on.

“We’ve got two of the top grass root sports facilities right next door to each other.”

The 95-acre Beversbrook Sports Facility is a multi-sport hub where community members can take part in a wide range of sports, including football, cricket, netball, tennis and archery.

It supports 48 home teams and, since April this year, there have been 301 league matches, 465 training sessions and 352 tournament matches at the facility.
