WAYLANDS couple Joseph and Jenny Hughes have lit up their garden with a festive Christmas display.

For the 11th year running they have put together the Christmas lights to raise money for charity and this year’s good cause is Cancer Research UK.

Mr Hughes, 57, said: “It’s a very good charity, anyone could have cancer. We have raised for them before and also Wiltshire Air Ambulance and other charities in the past.”

Mrs Hughes designed the layout of the lights display and her husband put them up, which took two weeks.

Mr Hughes said: “I had to get rid of six or seven sets of lights because they were no longer any good, so we have got some new lights this year.

“We decided to have the display in the garden and on the fence and not on the wall of the house. The trellis was getting a bit rotten and we had to take it off and the wall has been repainted.

“The trees are lit up and we’ve got blow-up Father Christmases, polar bears, seals and penguins.”

He said they had received a favourable response from their eight grandchildren and neighbours. “The neighbours reckon it’s better than last year’s display and the grandchildren love it,” said Mr Hughes.

Eastleigh Fish Bar in Eastleigh Road has a collection box for donations to Cancer Research UK on behalf of Mr and Mrs Hughes.
