An award-winning teashop in Bradford on Avon has been given a helping hand by broadcaster Ruth Watson for a Channel Four programme.

The Bridge Tea Rooms will star in the series finale of Ruth Watson Means Business next Friday, when viewers will see how her advice has improved the business.

Filmed in July, the show visits successful establishments that have the occasional negative review. Ruth Watson, best known for The Hotel Inspector, identifies whether the reviews were fair and if so how they can be overcome.

Roy Hayward, 47, who has owned The Bridge Tea Rooms with wife Ali for seven years, said: “We were contacted by Channel 4 and I thought it would be good to have a review of what we can do.

“Ruth was very stern on the first visit. She came in, had a meal, did an assessment and then came straight back to us.

“She said the scones were horrible. Some can be dry because of the number we make. Ruth suggested we try different recipes. I would now never go back to the original recipe.”

The couple also came face-to-face with two of the online reviewers, who visited the business to say what they would like to see changed.

Among the list of suggested changes was from wipe down tablecloths to linen, laminated menus to paper ones and serving afternoon tea all day.

Mr Hayward said: “We did everything she said and more.

“We are now more focused on fresh, local produce and organic where we can.

“When Ruth came back she was really impressed. It has been a good process. We’ve seen an increase in people having afternoon tea in the day and our takings are up a bit.”
