Community groups were allocated £4,635 at a Calne Area Board meeting on Tuesday night.

The money, agreed by Wiltshire councillors, went to Calne Town Council, the Calne Community Area Partnership and Calne FC.

The town council was awarded £3,335 towards CCTV coverage at the skate park in Station Road in response to complaints of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Plans for the re-development of the skate park, spearheaded by a group of youngsters who collected £10,000 towards the cost, are well underway and building could start in January.

It is hoped that a new CCTV camera will create a safer environment for residents and young skate enthusiasts.

Councillors allocated £700 to provide football dug outs for Calne FC, based at Bremhill View, which has a membership of more than 300 young players.

A total of £600 was allocated for a project to encourage develop parenting skills and provide an introduction to literacy, to be run through the Calne Community Area Partnership.

Mayor Mercy Baggs said: “I’m really sad to say that in Calne we have youngsters that can neither write or read.

“It is I’m afraid, a sad thing when you have to say this, but I hope that you will look forward to funding the project.”
