A 91-YEAR-OLD man is fighting for his life in hospital after sustaining serious head injuries following a collision with a car in Queens Drive at approximately 9.40am this morning.

The man was struck by a blue Ford Focus at the pedestrian crossing near the junctions with Windsor Road and Wolsely Avenue.

Wiltshire Police were swiftly on the scene, along with an ambulance, which transported the injured party to Great Western Hospital for urgent care on what have been described as life-threatening injuries by authorities.

The driver remained on the scene to speak with officers and assisted them with their enquiries and the injured man's family has been informed.

Queens Drive was closed in both directions whilst police cordoned off the scene, but fully reopened at 1.15pm.

Sergeant Steve Love, of the Roads Policing Unit at Wiltshire Police, said: “All we know at the moment, is the pedestrian was on the crossing when the collision with a blue Ford Focus took place.

“The elderly man has suffered very serious head injuries, which are considering life threatening.

“He is now being treated at Great Western Hospital.”

The casualty received first aid from passers-by until paramedics arrived.

A fleece belonging to one of those who assisted the man remained in the road whilst police assessed the incident site, along with a chocolate cake, which was splattered across the road.

“Obviously it was someone’s birthday,” said Sgt Love. “A couple of members of the public did stop to administer first aid.”
