RESIDENTS of Weavers Drive in Trowbridge put the drama of last month’s fire behind them as they came together for a Christmas meal.

Last friday’s dinner was arranged by Roy Lovelock, the warden of the sheltered housing complex, before fire destroyed his own bungalow and the roof of June White’s bungalow next door.

Mr Lovelock and Mrs White were put up at a bed and breakfast but have now been moved into local rented accommodation by Anchor, the housing provider.

Neighbours rallied round and set up Weavers Raising For Roy’s Residents fund to raise money for when they return. The total currently stands at £2,555.

Dee Field, of Spinners Croft, helped set up the fund and said: “It has brought the whole community together. Not everyone had fire damage, but they were all damaged by the fire.

“People’s generosity has been amazing considering the time of year. The residents received a Christmas present and Roy came with me to pick presents.

“This is the first time everyone has come together. I am hoping this will be the beginning of something every year.”

The food was donated by Apetito, crockery came from the Civic Centre and hall space was given by Trowbridge Town Council.

Community members helped to serve the meal, while Newtown Primary School, Rough Street Jug Band and Raggle Taggle provided the music and singing.

Mrs White’s granddaughter, Hayley Oakley-Westlake, of Hilperton, said: “She had only just moved in. This is a good chance for people to see how she is doing and get to know her.”
