A SPECIAL meeting asking council bosses to reconsider changes to the borough’s green waste and recycling is set to take place in the New Year.

At the council’s scrutiny committee on December 16, councillors agreed to refer changes to the household waste collection service back to cabinet for further consideration.

Concerns were raised about the financial impact of the plans.

On December 11 Cabinet voted to pass plans which will see residents paying £40 a year for their green waste and people’s recycling being collected fortnightly rather than weekly.

It is hoped this will save the authority about £1.2m.

Queries at the scrutiny meeting were raised about whether the assessment of savings takes into account all implementation costs, including costs relating to revenue collection, current service decoupling, setting up the new service, other operational overheads, and the impact on cost savings of any increase in landfill charges resulting from the disposal of recyclable waste via the waste collection service.

A more detailed financial report is going before Cabinet on Thursday, January 2.
