Devizes curry house fears for trade after roadworks sign error

Devizes businessman Sohidul Hossain fears he will lose business due to a blunder by Wiltshire Council and its highway contractor over the date of roadworks.

Mr Hossain, owner of the 1Spice Indian restaurant in Maryport Street, said confusion arose when signs went up informing people that Maryport Street would be closed this evening - January 17 - for resurfacing.

But when he checked with the council’s highway contractor, Balfour Beatty Living Places, he was told the work was taking place on January 23.

Wiltshire Council confirmed to the Gazette that the correct date for the work is January 23 despite the incorrect signs still being there.

Mr Hossain said if the public thought Maryport Street was closed tomorrow he fears he will lose custom.

He said: “Friday and Saturday nights are usually fully booked. I’ve got no bookings for January 17 which might be because of the sign.

"I’m frustrated at the lack of communication by Wiltshire Council and the fact they have made an error over the date of the work.”

Mr Hossain said he received a letter from Balfour Beatty on January 8 saying the work would be on January 17.

But when he contacted Balfour Beatty he received an email saying the work is programmed to take place on January 23.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the incorrect date being publicised.

"We can confirm these repairs are due to take place for one night (7pm to midnight) on January 23. Temporary traffic lights will be set up on the unaffected section of road to help maintain access.

“Local people have now received correct letters and the signs on site have been changed.”
