Fire crews from across Wiltshire were called to a tackle a fire in a flat above a Chippenham pub this morning.

Five fire engines from Chippenham, Corsham and Calne were called to the Sir Audley Arms in Audley Road at 1.22am, after a fire broke out in a first floor flat.

The occupants were all evacuated, and no one is believed to have been injured.

The crews were joined by an instant command vehicle dispatched from Devizes, along with support units and an aerial appliance form Swindon, which was used to strip tiles from the pub’s roof.

A total of eight breathing apparatus and three hose reel jets were used as the blaze was tackled. It was out by 5.25am.

Initial investigations into the cause have been conducted and will continue today.

Malmesbury watch manager Chris Harvey said: “We relieved the first fire crews at about 5am and there was still a lot of work to do then, but not a great deal.

“The damage is mainly confined to that one room, but there is further smoke damage throughout the building. We had to take the tiles off the roof to stop the fire spreading, so now we’re trying to make the roof waterproof.

“The bedroom is destroyed, but what they have done in terms of saving the rest of the property is fantastic. It could have been a lot worse.

"Immediate action from the crews has prevented the fire from spreading a lot further.”
