More than 450 men and youngsters stepped out at the weekend to take part in the second Bath Men's Walk, doubling the numbers from last year and doubling the amount raised.

The eight-mile event, which started at Winsley and finished at the Rec in Bath, was organised by the Bath Rugby Foundation and Dorothy House Hospice Care and it's hoped the walk will raise £40,000 tthis year.

Bath Men’s Walk, sponsored by event partner Thrings, was officially started by ITV weatherman Bob Crampton on Saturday wtih Bath Rugby stars Dave Wilson, Micky Young and Ben Williams joining walkers at the start to show their support.

Following a few inspirational words from former England and Bath rugby player David Trick, Dorothy House Chair of Trustees Simon Coombe and Bob Crampton, the walkers set off from Winsley across fields and canal path to the Rec, with an ‘unofficial’ watering stop at The George, Bathampton.

The walkers took approximately two hours to complete the route and were greeted with a well deserved pie and a pint ready to watch England's Six Nations match against France on the big screen.

David Flatman, former England and Bath Rugby player, who took part in the walk said: “I like a good walk, but they generally involve a stop every few hundred yards, a packet of organic crisps from the local shop and my panting dog.

"This might have been more of an aerobic challenge, but we all got it done for a wonderful cause. And charity aside, that pie and pint at the end of the walk was all the motivation a man ought to need.”

Halena Coury, head of fundraising for the Bath Rugby Foundation said, “Bath Men’s Walk is always such a fun event and this year was no exception.

"Thanks to all the walkers who helped create such a fantastic atmosphere throughout, even when England lost to France in the big game.

"Their support allows our charities to continue doing our work in the community. Thanks also to the sponsors, Thrings, Money Wise, Wadworth, Thatchers and Pieminister."
