AT A meeting of the cabinet last night it was decided not to formally refer the issue of Swindon’s wi-fi scandal to the police.

Last month a report was published by the scrutiny committee saying the council had been the victim of the sales skills of business Rikki Hunt, leading to a loss of £400,000.

They passed the decision on whether to refer the issue onto the police to the cabinet.

It emerged that last month Council Leader David Renard (Con, Haydon Wick) contacted Wiltshire Police over the issue but they said they would not be carrying out any more investigations.

A police spokesperson said: “The allegations have been reviewed by Wiltshire Police and with the information available to them they will not investigating the matter further.”

Coun Des Moffart (Lab, Rodbourne Cheney), who wrote the report, said he felt it was a mistake not referring it to the police as some people would continue to blame the council.

Rikki Hunt has denied any wrongdoing at any point over the failure of the scheme.
