A COMMITTEE set up in Winsley to commemorate the anniversary of the First World War later this year wants people with memorabilia and information on relatives to help with an exhibition.

Phillip Bush, 71, of Ashley Lane, helped set up the committee with three other people in the village. Its first meeting was last month.

Mr Bush said the plan had come about because there was an interest in the village for some form of commemoration.

During the weekend of August 2, there will be a service of commemoration in the village church, followed by a ceremony at the war memorial.

A tea in the village hall hosted by the WI will be held and there will be showings of classic First World War films.

The committee is supporting the Royal British Legion’s campaign to plant poppies around the village in memory of people who died.

Members are researching the lives of 13 men from the parish whose names are on the war memorial and it is hoped a small commemorative booklet will be produced.

Mr Bush said: “We particularly want to hear from people in the village who have relations who died in the First World War so they can be remembered at the memorial ceremony.

“We have to involve the whole village because it is not just about the 13 people from Winsley who died. Lots of other people have relatives who fell.”

Memorabilia already submitted includes Christmas cards from the King and Queen and medals. The items will be displayed with stories of others involved. It is also hoped the committee will visit local schools to help them with their understanding of the war.

Mr Bush’s father, Eric, served in the Navy in the war and Mr Bush himself was in the navy for 30 years.
