Youngsters at a Malmesbury school sang, danced and played music as part of their bid to raise hundreds of pounds for victims of a Philippines disaster.

After learning about the suffering of people following Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, children at Lea and Garsdon Church of England Primary School decided to come up with fundraising ideas to help affected Filipinos rebuild their lives.

One was a Lea’s Got Talent contest last Friday, in which pupils performed judo, sang, played instruments and danced in front of fellow students and parents.

Headteacher Kay Vousden said: “It was great. We talk about the Philippines at the school all the time and the older children thought up their own ways to raise money.

“The children who performed in the talent show had put in so much effort and there were a lot of skills we haven’t seen before.

“It was great for them to show off the things that have been practised in and out of the school.”

The contest was won by a year six pupil, Lottie, who played guitar.

An art sale put together by other students completed the day’s events.

Other ventures have included a non-uniform day, a cake sale, a bring-and-buy sale, a sponsored silence and a film night, which has helped exceed their original £600 fundraising target.
