A fundraising golf day in memory of former Bradford Town striker Mark Robinson, who died of a heart attack, has raised £3,000.

The money is being split between the British Heart Foundation and sporting causes.

Mr Robinson, 50, collapsed while walking his dog in Widbrook Woods, Bradford on Avon, last July and his family wanted to celebrate his 51st birthday this year with a fundraiser.

The father-of-three was a member of Cumberwell golf course in the town for six years so his family organised a golf day, dinner and auction at the club on January 10.

The overall winner was Danny Griffiths from Melksham, who won a golf bag and club. Auction items included a day at the races and football shirts donated by individuals and organisations including Bouygues UK Ltd.

With £2,000 going towards the British Heart Foundation, the remaining £1,000 was split evenly between Chippenham Park FC, pole vaulter Andy Sutcliffe, gymnast Larissa Royal and decathlete Adam Carpenter, who travels from Poole to Bath for pole vault coaching.

Mr Robinson’s son Mark, 26, plays for Chippenham Park FC, his daughter Lauren, 16, is a former gymnast who is now a pole vaulter and his eldest daughter Leigh, 26, is an equestrian. The family wanted to donate the money to aspiring sports stars.

His wife Elaine said: “We are a sporty family and Mark loved golf; he was sports mad. He would have been very proud of the fact so many people turned up for such a good cause.”

The family have now decided to celebrate Mr Robinson’s birthday every year with a fundraising golf day.

Alison Rosier, fundraising manager at British Heart Foundation, said: “We are absolutely delighted with this generous donation. It will go towards research for heart disease. We have come on leaps and bounds in the last 50 years, but there is a lot of work to be done. We cannot do it without the help of people like the Robinson family.”

Mr Sutcliffe, 22, from Hinton Charterhouse, has been pole vaulting for 10 years. He works as a teaching assistant at St Gregory’s College in Bath to fund his sport.

He said: “The donation is a massive help. The indoor season is in France and I was in doubt if I could go because of money but this has helped towards travelling expenses.”

Ten-year-old Larissa, from Bristol, has been in gymnastics for eight years and trains 20 hours a week at City of Bristol Gymnastics. She said: “It was an honour to receive the cheque. It will go towards my fees.”
