The Crown Estate has dropped plans to build 50 houses in Bromham after concerns were raised by the parish council.
The Crown, which owns a considerable amount of land in the village, has been discussing proposals with the parish council over a number of years.
But its latest scheme for 50 houses did not find favour with the parish council.
The homes were proposed to be built at the rear of the Rectory and Breach Close with access from The Pound.
The land is grade two agricultural land and classed as an exception site with some archaeological significance.
The Crown Estate said half of the 50 homes could be classed as affordable.
The parish council suggested a scheme for 15 homes, but it was told this was not suitable.
Peter Paget, chairman of Bromham Parish Council, said: “The parish council was against 50 houses, we thought that was far too much for Bromham.
“We did a housing needs survey two years ago that identified there was a need for 19 houses.
“We were looking for a compromise so we thought 15 homes was an optimal amount for our village.
“The Crown Estate didn’t think 15 houses would be viable for them to do a scheme.”
