SingeR-songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones impressed his audience at Devizes Town Hall last Wednesday with his skilled guitar playing and beautiful songs as well as his passion for social justice.
He sang songs he had written about the If campaign last year as well as some old favourites such as The Black Velvet Band. He also gave a slide show about the plight of olive farmers in Palestine and performed a moving song about a butterfly trapped in an underground carriage, which was a metaphor for all those trapped in poverty.
Taysir Arbasi, director of the Fairtrade company Zaytoun, was at the concert and people were able to buy Zaytoun products from the stall as well as Traidcraft food and crafts.
Gareth encouraged everyone to sign a petition to the Secretary of State for Business to ‘Make Bananas Fair’.
Petitioners are asking the Government to intervene in the supermarkets’ banana price wars as the price of non-Fairtrade bananas has been falling while the costs of production have rise, hitting banana farmers hard.
