Swindon Town owner Lee Power has confirmed that the club has scrapped plans to move its training bases to the Beversbrook facility in Calne.

Calne Town Council and former chairman Jed McCrory began negotiations over the relocation of the club’s senior and youth academy in May last year.

But when Mr Power took charge of the football club in December, he opted against the switch, citing the distance players would have to travel to reach training.

Town clerk Linda Roberts said she suspected Swindon Town had changed its mind and there had been a break-down in communication between the two parties.

She sent a letter asking the club to confirm its plans or the town council would have to withdraw its offer, and she did not receive a reply.

She said: “First of all we suggested to Swindon that we wouldn’t be accommodating them because they weren’t responding to our requests for information.

“I heard that they weren’t going to be coming to Beversbrook on BBC Wiltshire radio. I had guessed this, but like I said the town council is very much of the mind it had to remain for the community.

“It was probably for the best, but it was worth exploring. For both parties, after much deliberation, it’s probably best we stick to what we’re good at. Perhaps they were a little bit discourteous towards the end, let’s say.”

Swindon Town’s stay at its current base in Liddington ends in the summer and Mr Power is looking at several alternatives for the club.

He told BBC Wiltshire: “We finish at Liddington this year. My predecessor was looking at Calne and the first thing I did was knock that on the head because we should be training in Swindon, not Calne.

“I’ve been working with the local authority trying to identify sites. One is St Luke’s and I get on well with Jezz (Webb) at Supermarine and there’s a possibility of going up there as well.”

Calne Town Council had planned a £300,000 extension for the Beversbrook sports facility to accommodate Swindon Town.

The 95-acre sports facility already supports 48 home teams and was named the IOG Grass Roots Sports Ground of the Year 2013.

Mrs Roberts said: “We’ve still got Beversbrook and we’re looking at doing some training with young footballers and starting up an academy ourselves. This will be a Beversbrook academy, that’s just being explored as we speak.”
