LOCAL employment and skills needs in the construction sector will be the focus of a high level industry summit on Tuesday. Organised by the think tank Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the Construction Summit will bring together Swindon and Wiltshire councillors, local construction firms and training providers to look at the role of the construction industry in the area, examining the best ways to support skills and training.

The event is the first in a national series which will examine the important role that local government can play in supporting the construction sector and local skills needs.

A series of talks will be delivered throughout the morning to examine Swindon’s particular needs and plans for the future.

Coun Dale Heenan, cabinet member for strategic planning and sustainability, said: “I was delighted to be asked to speak at the Construction Summit in Swindon.

“Swindon Council has detailed plans for the jobs-led growth of the town over the next 15 years, and the construction industry is critical to its success.

“The needs of the construction sector locally will be top of the summit’s agenda and we will all be working together to ensure local residents have the right training and skills to contribute to a thriving industry.”

The event is at the Civic Offices from 9am to noon.
