More than 300 people took part in the Calne Rotary Club’s annual 10k fun run and walk at Bowood on Sunday, raising more than £2,000 for the RNLI and Calne Welfare Charities.

Participants enjoyed sunny weather and a picturesque route including cross country and woodland tracks, as well as refreshments at the end provided by Rotary Club volunteers.

The winner was Douglas White, from Swindon, who finished in 25 minutes 56 seconds, and Ronan Landon, from Chippenham, was second with a time of 37 minutes and six seconds.

Max Matthews, from Calne, was first in the 16 and under category with a time of 45 minutes and 46 seconds and roughly 160 people finished the challenge within an hour.

The run, now in its 26th year, attracted runners and walkers from as far away as Doncaster and London, as well as 39-year-old Sarah Green from the Wirral.

Mrs Green, who grew up in Chippenham, is undertaking a year of fundraising in memory of four family members who died of cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle.

She walked the course with Siobhan and Holly Golding from Calne, the widow and eight-year-old daughter of her brother Andrew Golding, who died 34 years ago.

Mrs Green, who also lost her mum Joan to the disease, said: “It was emotional, I think particularly with it being Mother’s Day and my mum being gone.

“Because my eight-year-old niece was doing it with us we were at the end, but that was fine. It was really well organised and the weather helped a lot because it was so warm.”

Race organiser Alastair Muir said: “It’s one of our biggest fundraising events and people also fundraise for their own charities, which is great because we want to help as many people as we can.

“It was a great atmosphere, the place was packed, and the sun was shining. The runners were brilliant, and everyone was really helpful. We had a lot of great marshals and the coffee and bacon sandwiches were greatly appreciated.”

Members of the RNLI, and Rotary Club members from Chippenham, Calne and the South Cotswolds volunteered to marshal on the day.

The main sponsors of the event were Chilvester Financial, DMN Westinghouse, Wessex Water and the Patford House Surgery.
