Visitors to Devizes can be assured of a gold-standard comfort break after the town’s superloo in the west central car park received yet another recognition of its excellent service.
Attendants Brian Adcock and Monica Taib were delighted when they heard they had earned a gold award in the Loo of the Year awards, to go along with the five-star certificates they have gained each year since former mayor Peter Evans opened it in November 2007.
Mr Adcock, who lives in Devizes, said: “It’s great that our work has been recognised in this way and it’s so good for the town as well.”
Mrs Taib, a grandmother of two from Bishops Cannings, said: “It’s all part of our job to make sure the toilets are clean and pleasant at all times.
“We check them when we come on duty at 9am and every hour until the superloo closes at 4pm.”
Coun Evans said he was pleased that the superloo had retained its standards over the intervening years.
He said: “We took a lot of flak at the time as we were closing substandard conveniences that were very expensive to maintain.
“But it has clearly paid off as the presence of these toilets are one of the reasons for the town getting coach-friendly status.”
Claire Markwell of the Devizes Community Area Partnership said: “The superloo helps make Devizes a really good destination for tourists.
“What’s more important when you arrive in a town than a good loo where you can make yourself comfortable before enjoying what the town has to offer?”
Tony Aldridge, of the Devizes Area Tourism Partnership, confirmed that the quality of the loos was important in its award of coach-friendly status.
He said: “The people from the coach companies who came to assess the town said they would happily eat off the floor in the toilet, it was so clean and well looked after.
“Now we have the coach parking spaces in New Park Street, the toilets are central to whole tourist experience of Devizes.”
