POLICE are appealing for witnesses to two separate crashes which saw two cyclists injured on the Great Western Way on Monday.

The first incident happened at approximately 9.40am near B&Q and closed the eastbound carriageway of the road close to the Barnfield roundabout.

A 69-year-old cyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash, which involved an Iveco Daily 50 white tipper van, and remains in a serious condition in Frenchay Hospital.

The driver and passenger in the van did not suffer any injuries.

The incident occurred close to where the cycle lane running from Barnfield Road crosses Great Western Way towards Barnfield Close.

There were temporary traffic lights in place at the scene when the collision occurred.

Later the same day, at approximately 3.20pm, another cyclist was in collision with a red Honda Jazz at the roundabout with the junction of Cocklebury Road and Corporation Street.

The male cyclist was taken to hospital and is currently believed to be in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service, which sent one land ambulance and a rapid response crew to the crash, said: “We got a call to the area at 3.21pm. A male cyclist, aged 30 years old, was taken to the Great Western Hospital and then later transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

“He was suffering with head and back injuries.”

The cyclist is currently believed to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The driver of the Honda Jazz was reported for careless driving.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We would still like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed the incidents on Monday.

“Any information, regardless of how small, may prove important to both investigations.”
