A GROUP of children scaled new heights this week when they took part in a climbing holiday camp at The Link Centre.

The six youngsters made their first climb of the nine-metre indoor wall on Monday and had their final assessments yesterday to see how their skills had developed.

Instructors taught them the correct climbing techniques as well as all the safety precautions that need to be carried out. .

Instructor Tom Murawicki said: “We’ve had a good turn-out over the Easter break and the group we’ve had in this week have really progressed. “All of them have got to the top of the wall and we have nurtured their skills. “We are pleased with the amount of people we’ve had in over Easter, in general, as the weather has been good and some climbers like to take on outdoor walls in the good weather.

“We are really pleased with the group we’ve had in this week and we hope they’ll carry on climbing with their families. “Climbing, unlike sports such as football or rugby, is something you can do with family in a social atmosphere. “The best thing is that everyone can be of different standards and our instructors do all they can to assist.”

During the holidays, the centre, in Whitehill Way, Westlea, has also offered children the chance to ice skate and play football, as well as take part in other sports activities.

Ian Pickering, the centre’s operations assistant manager, said: “We’ve been very happy with how the holidays have gone. “We’ve had lots of sessions going on a daily basis. It is great to see so many young people coming down and getting fit and healthy over the Easter break.

“It is important that everybody, particularly children, keep fit and healthy so we are very pleased to offer a lot of activities for them to enjoy.”

The Link Centre’s ice rink will be hosting an Easter egg hunt tomorrow between 10am and noon.

Mr Pickering said: “I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun in that session as we usually get some good groups in at the weekend.”
