MORE than 50 celebrities have come to stay in Wanborough for the next two weeks after the launch of the village’s annual scarecrow trail.

There will be 56 scarecrows dotted around the village until May 11 after the trail was launched on Saturday. This year the theme is World of Celebrities with visitors having to make a guess as to who each scarecrow is or what the celebrity connection is to be in with a chance of winning up to £100 in Marks and Spencer vouchers.

The trail, which will take around three hours to complete, is buggy and wheelchair friendly.

Tessa Lanstein, a member of the Wanborough Village Hall Management Committee, helped to organise this year’s trail.

She said: “There were quite a few people out on the trail although people will be able to do it for the next two weeks so there will probably be more people coming next weekend and the weekend after.

“It’s really popular and a real feature in the village calendar.

“It’s usually combined with the May Day Fayre, which this year takes place on May 5.”

The annual event has proved very popular over the years with organisers having to limit the number of scarecrows to 60.

Tessa said: “I’m very pleased that we have so many scarecrows, and some of them look really good as well.

“We had to limit the number of scarecrows because so many people wanted to take part.”

The most popular day for the scarecrow trail is on the morning of the May Day fayre, which takes place from noon on May 5 at the village hall and recreation ground.

As usual there will be lots of stalls and activities to enjoy, including wang the welly, pony rides, a coconut shy, bouncy castles, break a plate, and soak the bloke.

There will also be dancing around the maypole and opportunities to browse through the wares from local crafters as well as plants, books and puzzles stalls, a beer tent, a barbecue and tea and cakes.

Entry forms for the trail and the children’s activity are available from the village hall, the village store and from the local pubs.

Entry costs £2.50 for a trail sheet and £1 for a children’s sheet.

Toilets and refreshments are available halfway around the trail on weekends and the bank holiday between 2pm and 5pm. For more information, contact Tessa on 07795 057420, email tessa@lanstein.freeserve.co.uk or visit wanborough.info.
