Donations in memory of Devizes man Mark Stobbart, whose body was found in the Kennet and Avon Canal, can now be made online.

Mr Stobbart’s funeral service is on Tuesday, May 6, at St James’ Church, Southbroom, at 10.30am.

His family have asked for donations to go to two charities he supported, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Two Just Giving sites have been set up; www.justgiving.com/Mark-Stobbart1 for the air ambulance and www.justgiving.com/Mark-Stobbart2 for Macmillan.

Mr Stobbart, 44, raised money for Macmillan when he ran the Great North Run in 2003 and 2004.

His home in Keepers Road, on the new Quakers Walk estate, is close to the joint police helicopter/air ambulance’s base. He and his wife, Clare, nicknamed the helicopter ‘Heli’ for the benefit of their three and a half-year-old son, Conor, when they saw it flying overhead.

Mr Stobbart’s body was found in the Kennet and Avon Canal near Quakers Walk bridge on Good Friday morning shortly before the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race was due to start.

Police believe he had been out socialising the previous evening and had been in the Lamb Inn, St John’s Street, leaving between 1am and 2am on Good Friday.

Although police believe there are no suspicious circumstances they would still like to hear from anyone who may have information.

An inquest was opened by Wiltshire Coroner David Ridley on April 23 in Salisbury.

It was adjourned for further tests to determine the cause of death and for the police to conclude their investigation.
