OLYMPIC star Beth Tweddle will be displaying a cartwheeling masterclass when she visits Swindon today.

She will also be reunited with the mat on which she won her bronze medal in the uneven bars at London 2012, after Swindon gymnastics club Espirit Gymnastics bought it for £14,000.

Beth’s achievements to date include an MBE, the Olympic medal, six European championships, and seven national championships.

As part of the Steppes Travel competition, Cartwheel the World, where travellers are encouraged to send in videos of them flipping in far-flung parts of the world, Beth will be demonstrating the perfect cartwheel at Espirit Gymnastics.

The gym, based at Headlands Grove, will play host to Beth and Cirencester-based Steppes Travel from noon to 2pm.

Mark Hows, of Espirit Gymnastics, said: “Beth has retired now and is doing the celebrity circuit.

“After she won the medal in 2012 she went on to win Dancing on Ice, and has now started her own series of academies.

“We were contacted by the travel agent from Cirencester to ask us to hire the gym for the event, and they floated the idea of using Beth to teach the staff to do the perfect cartwheel.

“The sprung floor we have fitted is the exact same one she won her bronze medal on, so it will be a reunion of sorts. Straight after the competition finished we bought it off the O2 for our gym.

“We want to keep the whole thing relatively low key, with just a few gymnasts coming along to see.

“It is wonderful to have Beth here, I have been to a few gymnastics events around the country and she has been at most of them. She really is a lovely girl.”

Beth said of the competition: “It is fantastic to be supporting such a wonderful initiative which is so close to my heart and I hope the day will encourage the Steppes team to continue their gymnastic flair.

“South Africa is my birth home and later this year I will be cartwheeling my way through Cape Town and along the Garden Route which I am greatly looking forward to revisiting.”

Justin Wateridge, managing director at Steppes Travel, said: “We are hugely grateful to Beth Tweddle for taking the time to come and train us.

“Travel is all about fun and we’re here to encourage people to embrace travel no matter where they may go.

“The fun and hilarity of an untrained cartwheel can only enhance the experience.”
