Students’ fashion project will help brighten up care home
Seven students studying for their HND Textile and Fashion are taking part and will be creating various pieces of work to decorate the dining room of the care home.
Working with the dementia department of the home, the overall aim is to improve the wellbeing of the residents. The theme of the works will be healthy eating and nutrition.
The college is also looking to use the project as a way of teaching new generations skills such as knitting, weaving, crochet, lace making or any other traditional hand skills.
As a result, the course tutor is asking for anyone who may have these skills to come forward and help the students.
Natalie Adamson-Wain said: “The textiles industry has developed and changed at a staggering rate and it is important that these traditional skills are maintained and passed on to a new generation.
“We are currently looking for anyone who is willing to work with our dedicated group of seven students in the month of May and June to complete the brief.
“This is a great opportunity to get involved in an exciting and worthwhile project and to work with the students, not only passing your skills down but also learning new techniques.”
The college has much of the equipment needed to complete the task so is predominately looking for expertise. The department has three cricket looms and a knitting machine, which enables them to provide all the wool and yarn they need.
On top of that, anyone who is keen to pursue an interest in learning these skills can sign up to the course.
Natalie said: “The HND programme aims to provide practical skills, creativity and employability through design practise, industry linked briefs and community projects. If you have a passion for fashion or textiles then this provides an ideal opportunity to develop your passion.”
