While Steve Ojomoh and his team have garnered all the plaudits during their journey to Twickenham, the club’s dedicated behind-the-scenes staff have worked equally hard this season.

One of the club’s best-known faces is kit-man Ian Lawes, who has supported all the club’s teams for ten years, and can’t wait to cheer them to victory in west London.

He said: “I do all the gardening at the club, and I clean the changing rooms every night.

“I also do the scoreboards on a Saturday and help with the team kit. All the week we get the youngsters here in the evening, so I am always available to them.”

He first got involved with the club when his two sons started playing, and has stuck with it ever since.

He said: “They asked if I could put a few water bottles out of an evening, and then I just took on more and more jobs.

“I love doing it for the boys. It’s nice to see them all coming through the ranks. I’ve seen them become men.”

The 66-year-old retired Bowyers worker has put his time working with Trowbridge in Bloom to good use, making sure the new clubhouse looks as welcoming as possible.

He said: “On the matchdays I do the meet and great at the away team end, and we’re getting quite a reputation for that now.

“Getting to Twickenham is everybody’s aim but I am more happy for the boys, they put a lot of effort in last season.

“When we had to get out of the old club they didn’t even have a proper pitch for the summer, they were all playing at John of Gaunt School.

“I was so pleased after the Guildford game, there are no words for it.

“We were all crying, I had no fingernails left, and there are one or two people who still can’t talk now.

“Win or lose the boys have done us proud; all I hope for is they give it their best.”
