Community groups in Gastard can look forward to using the village hall in warmth and comfort again, after its restoration appeal smashed its £20,000 target.
The hall’s management committee intends to carry out major renovation works, such as removing asbestos from the roof, adding a disabled toilet and replacing the outdated heating system, and was amazed last week to reach the target so quickly.
The fundraising only started in November, and treasurer Debbie Anstis said: “I had it earmarked for three stages, I didn’t dream we would get it all sorted so quickly.
“I thought I would be applying for grants over the next few years.”
A series of fundraising events were held at the hall and Mrs Anstis also worked to secure a number of grants, including £10,000 from Corsham Town Council and more than £13,000 from the Hills Group.
