Boxers are a NEET way to inspire kids

BOXERS Kelvin Young and Lawrence Bennett visited John Moulton Hall to promote the opportunities on offer to young people in Penhill.
The pair gave their backing to the Skills to Pay the Bills Roadshow, organised by the charity Clivey and Twist, based in Penhill Drive, to highlight the options for those not in education, employment or training.
The youngsters, known as NEETS, were able speak to representatives from New College, Swindon College and businesses about their next move. Organisers also hoped the group, aged between nine and 25, would be inspired by the stories behind Kelvin and Lawrence’s careers .
Aaron Webb, senior youth worker, said: “It was a great chance to bring the community together and show our NEETS what is available to them. I think having Kelvin and Lawrence here is a big draw to the young people.
“I think the advice and guidance available from people with a wide range of expertise will hopefully encourage our young people to take the next step in their lives, whether that sees them seeking further education or employment.”
Aaron recently took up his position with the organisation, which supports vulnerable and disadvantaged children, and hopes to stage more events like yesterday’s roadshow.
He said: “We are trying to hold as many activities as possible for the whole of Swindon, not just young people, to bring the community together.
“One of the great things about the roadshow was that young people got to meet face to face with people from colleges and businesses and have an informal chat about their options, with no pressure being put on them.”
During the event at John Moulton Hall, visitors were able to take part in a Nintendo Wii tournament, enter a raffle and watch live music performances.
Next Thursday (May 29), the centre will be hosting a big lunch event between 11am and 6.30pm, being organised by Penhill Haven, which is open for all to attend. To find out more about the charity’s work visit www.clivey.co.uk
