A man has been arrested in connection an unprovoked stabbing near a Melksham underpass last Sunday (25th).

A man was approached from behind in near the Bath Road underpass at 3am, when he was punched in the stomach and stabbed in the inner thigh.

The assailant, who was unknown to the victim, then ran off towards the town centre.

He was described as a white man, around 6ft, wearing a light grey hoodie, dark trousers and light trainers.

The victim was treated at the scene for a stab wound to his right leg, and did not require hospital treatment.

The following day a small green kitchen knife believed to have been used in the attack was discovered discarded in a garden at nearby Bell Court, and handed in to police.

Following a police appeal a 24-year-old was arrested in connection with the attack. He has now been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Andy Morley said: "Thankfully, the victim was not badly hurt but we are treating this extremely seriously.

"I'd like to reassure the local community that incidents such as this are rare and we are doing all we can to find the person responsible for this crime."
