LYDIARD Park was turned into a sea of pink over the weekend as thousands of women and girls took part in the annual Race for Life.

The event saw participants of all ages dress in a variety of pink costumes to complete the race to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Races of differing lengths took place on both Saturday and Sunday and with the sun coming out there was a carnival atmosphere.

Some were running the races competitively while others went at a more casual pace around the course, soaking up the surroundings. But ultimately, everyone was raising money in the fight against cancer.

In total, more than £220,000 was raised over the two days, with that total expected to increase as all the sponsorship money arrives.

More than 3,700 people ran one of the races, an increase on the previous year, and many of the participants had their own heartbreaking tale of a friend or family lost to cancer.

Among them was Vicky Evans, 37, of Wanborough, who was running alongside her friend Lorna Nolan, 39, in memory of her father.

Vicky said: “I’m doing this because my dad died from a brain tumour about 18 years ago. He was a really keen runner so in some way this feels like a tribute to him.

“I have done a few races like this before but not for about seven or eight years. When I first did a Race for Life it was only a small event but it’s great to see it grow. Next year we are going to do it with the children because it is such a fun day.”

It was not just adults who were taking part but youngsters as well. One of them was 12-year-old Jaime Aldred, whose grandfather Steve died suddenly from a brain tumour in 2005.

She said: “This is the first time I have done it. I just wanted to raise some money for a good cause.”

As Jaime needed to be accompanied by an adult, her aunt Jo Bacon, 31, of Covingham ran alongside her.

She said: “Jaime was really keen to do it for her grandad. He was diagnosed with the illness and then died about six months later so it was all very sudden.

“She had to have an adult with her and as I have done about three or four before I said I would. It’s a great day and a fantastic atmosphere.”

Simon Burley, an events manager for Cancer Research, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic this year. We’re really pleased with the weather and the feedback we’re getting is everyone has had a good time.

“I just want to say thank you to all the volunteers who have helped make this weekend such a success.”
