A teenager who launched a violent attack on his ex's new boyfriend has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

George Dolman, 19, left his victim with 'horrendous' facial injuries after he kicked him when he was on the ground outside a Calne supermarket, a court heard.

Dolman's victim needed to undergo surgery to have titanium mesh inserted in his face to keep his eyeball in place.

And as well as the fractured eye socket he also had breaks to his cheekbone and nose following the violent assault.

Claire Marlow, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court on Friday that Dolman had argued with his former girlfriend in the Co-op car park on Friday, January 10.

As they were shouting at each other her new boyfriend arrived and punched Dolman to the face.

Miss Marlow said the defendant punched him back and when he went to the ground he kicked him to the face and body, fracturing his cheekbone.

Dolman, of Quarry Barton, Calne, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mike Pulsford, defending said his client, who has no previous convictions, realises now he should have just walked away after being punched.

He said: "He never believed, for one minute, because he didn't stop to think probably, that the serious eye injury that resulted, would be the end result."

Mr Pulsford urged the court to impose a suspended sentence saying he could then pay compensation to his victim.

Recorder Sam Qureshi said: "I bear in mind that the offence has been caused not by your making originally but with the argument with your former girlfriend.

"As a result of that her new boyfriend got involved and you punched him back.

"You then kicked him while he was on the ground and the injuries are horrendous considering the kick that was involved: a fractured cheekbone, broken nose, fractured eye socket.

"That has had to be reconstructed by titanium mesh as the eyeball was not able to stay in place without it.

"In my mind the main mitigating factor in this case is simply your young age."
