THE Witch Queen wrought havoc when she revolted against the king and trained a Wyvern dragon to become his enemy deep in the forest.

But the story had a fairytale ending, with good triumphing over evil in the annual inter-schools drama day at Postern Hill in Marlborough.

Pupils from St Michael’s in Aldbourne, Kennet Valley, Preshute, Shalbourne, Broad Hinton, Ramsbury, Ogbourne St George, Great Bedwyn, Chilton Foliat and St Katharine’s Schoold took part in the annual event last Thursday.

In a plot written by organiser James Smith, the 240 youngsters came together to formulate a plan to destroy the evil queen.

However, she got wind of their revolt and enlisted the help of evil Darkens, played by St John’s students, and goblins to bring them down.

The sun was shining as the sides went into battle and it was touch and go when the king was stabbed with a poison sword. Luckily, the Evlen Majors were on hand to bring him back to life and restore order in the kingdom. Afterwards, Mr Smith said: “Everybody had a fantastic time.

“I think all the schools would agree it’s the happiest day of the whole year.

“Originally, the day was organised to help teachers with creative writing lessons and it’s a day when they are not chained to their desks.

“For the boys in particular, they like the fun of being outside and getting involved in the action.”

The event, in its 14th year, is usually held at West Woods but had to be relocated because of tree felling.

Mr Smith said: “It was a fantastic day as could be seen from the children’s smiling faces when they went home.”
