A Trowbridge pensioner is searching for the mystery Samaritan who helped him to hospital last weekend, after he was knocked over by a car.

Geoff Butt, 77, of Maple Grove, was heading home with his morning shopping on Saturday when he was hit by a car reversing the wrong way down Fore Street shortly after 9am.

He is now appealing to speak to Norma, a passing shopper who stayed with him in the ambulance to the Bath RUH.

He said: “I was crossing the road to get the bus and I got halfway across, then the next thing I knew I was on my back.

“People gathered round and picked me up. They got me off the road and got a chair from the Subway for me to sit on.

"Then it started to rain so they asked Kavanaghs estate agents if they could take me inside.

“One woman stayed with me, carried my shopping, and even came to the hospital, then she called her husband and arranged to take me home.

“I don’t know anything about her, just that her name was Norma.”

Mr Butt moved to Trowbridge fron Lincolnshire with his wife Sandra last September, and is now recovering at home.

He said: “There were so many good people who helped me, and I don’t know any of them. A police officer even came to see me afterwards, which I thought was above his duty.

“My head was bleeding quite badly, but they’ve glued me back up now, though my back’s still quite bad.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone concerned, but especially to Norma.

“Luckily enough I didn’t suffer too much shock; but you just don’t realise how good people are.”

Following the incident a 55-year-old man was reported by police for driving without insurance.
