Bradford on Avon heroes’ families in centenary call

Bradford on Avon Town Council is appealing to relatives of the heroes on its Roll of Honour to join them in commemorating the First World War in August.
The Roll of Honour, placed in the grounds of Westbury House in 1914, has the names of about 500 men from Bradford on Avon who served in the Great War.
The Town Council is organising a rededication of the war memorial, which has 125 names of men who fell in both world wars, in Westbury Gardens on August 3 and is keen to involve as many people as possible.
Councillor Laurie Brown, chairman of the Remembrance Working Group, said: “It is very important for those families to remember what their relatives did. We want to invite anyone who has a connection to this event.”
Rector Joanna Abecassis will lead the service of rededication, which will also involve the British Legion, town council and schools.
A bugler will mark the minute’s silence before the names of the fallen are read out. The names of men who fell in the German twinning town of Norden and the French twinning town of Sully-Sur-Loire will also be read.
St Margaret’s Hall will be a hive of activity on the day, with music, food and a display of photos and panels for people to learn more about the First World War.
Historian Jonathan Falconer, whose research will form part of the display, said: “It is important that we honour the sacrifices made. A lot of them were plucked from a small market town and thrust into something which was a completely alien situation.”
The Roll of Honour is due to be refurbished and the war memorial will be cleaned.
The Remembrance Working Group is in the process of applying for an Area Board grant to pay for half the cost of the event and refurbishments and the town council will contribute to the other half.
