Pupils at Fitzmaurice Primary School in Bradford on Avon are “suitably challenged and motivated to do their best” according to Ofsted inspectors, who rated the school 'good'.

The inspectors observed 25 lessons between May 7 and 8 and the report commended pupils’ enjoyment of the school, their good behaviour, good progress and reaching above average standards.

Headteacher Tracey Dunn said: “We were last inspected in 2009 and the Ofsted framework has changed so much since then. We were delighted they came.

“The last report was such a long time ago it wasn’t reflecting the school as it was now.”

The report stated: “Teaching engages and challenges pupils and those with a leadership role are ambitious for pupils’ academic and personal development.

“They (pupils) are keen to learn and they try hard. They feel safe and know how to take care of themselves.”

Mrs Dunn said: “It was a fantastic experience. I am really proud of the children and the way they showed inspectors the school on a daily basis.

“Everybody really engaged well with the inspectors and how they felt about the school. It was a really positive picture.

“In one of the meetings they commented to us it is clear Fitzmaurice is all about the children. That is the best thing they said to us because it is exactly where we come from.

"Everything we do it is to provide them the very best opportunities and education we can.”

Inspectors advised that the school is not rated 'outstanding' for a couple of reasons, including the pupils were not routinely given time to look at and respond to teachers’ comments in marked work before starting new work.

Mrs Dunn added: “We are always striving to be the best we can. The points the inspectors have given for why we are not outstanding are things we are already working on and knew about.”
