Fire crews have maintained an overnight watch at EJ Shanley's scrap yard, as Saturday’s dramatic fire continues to burn.

A single crew remained at the Shails Lane site overnight, with two fire engines now at the scene.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, with more information expected to be released after a telecom meeting between Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Environment Agency officials and Wiltshire Council later today.

However early indications suggest the blaze, which saw 40 firefighters working at its peak, started as a small car fire, which rapidly spread out of control.

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: “It’s a risk at that type of site, but it’s not unusual because of the nature of what they are doing there.”

The fumes still rising from the fire are not thought to be dangerous to local residents, but anyone who can still see or smell smoke is advised to keep their windows closed as a precaution.
