FOOTBALL fans in Swindon put themselves through one last dose of punishment yesterday as England’s miserable 2014 World Cup campaign ended with a whimper.

Despite England already being eliminated, many fans still went to pubs across the town to cheer on Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions as they ended a disappointing tournament with a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica.

Staff from The Savoy, in Regent Street, said there had been a noticeable drop in trade following England’s opening two losses.

Jessica Wichall, who works at the pub, said: “It’s gone really quiet compared to the opening game and it sadly feels like all the spirit has gone.

“There was a really good atmosphere for the matches against Italy and Uruguay but it’s not like that tonight unfortunately.”

Jessica said the pub would be taking down their England decorations but hope to welcome fans of other nations as the competition continues.

England fans will now be left supporting other countries for the rest of the World Cup.

Dean McDonagh, 25, said: “There was a really subdued atmosphere tonight.

“This was a really disappointing game to end a disappointing tournament for England.

“Germany will be the team I’m backing for the rest of it, although being a Manchester United I have a soft spot for our new manager Louis Van Gaal, so I hope Holland do well.”

David Collins, 30, said: “I wanted to watch the game tonight to see the future as I thought we’d attack Costa Rica, but we didn’t and it is just a shame that the World Cup is over now for us.”

Swindon’s Italian community were also left pondering what might have been after the Azzurri lost 1-0 to Uruguay.

The result left Italy catching an early plane home with fellow group members England.

Lisa Brizzi, who works at Italian restaurant Mario’s, in Wood Street, Old Town, was highly disappointed.

Lisa, 51, who predicted Italy would win 2-1, said: “I was sure we’d do something to make the nation proud.

“I really wanted Italy and England to do well after we’d played England in the first game.”
