A MAN found dead on a secluded path near the Hawksworth Industrial Estate last night suffered multiple stab wounds in a vicious attack.

Wiltshire Police have now launched a murder investigation after the man, who is in his 60s, was found at around midnight on the path running between the town centre and the industrial estate by the Oasis.

His body was discovered by a member of the public lying on an embankment about 100 metres from the railway station. He was believed to have been cycling, as a pedal cycle was found next to his body with the lights still on.

A post mortem examination is underway to determine the exact causes of death, and investigating officers have no obvious motive for the attack or suspects at this time.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but police believe they know the identity of the victim.

Officers have been brought onto the case from Avon and Somerset police, and investigations will continue for some time with increased foot patrols in the community.

DCI Sean Memory, lead investigating officer, said: “This appears to have been a completely vicious stranger attack. We are appealing for any members of the public who may have been in the area at the time to come forward. It appears to have been quite a well used path, and early indications suggest the offence may have occurred around 10.30pm.

“There is someone out there who has done this, so if anyone has come home last night with blood on their clothes or if their behaviour has changed considerably overnight, we would like to speak to them.”

Residents are being asked to be particularly vigilant, and to avoid travelling alone in secluded areas at night. Anyone with any information is asked to call 101.
