Pupils, parents and staff at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon took part in their own Race For Life.

Headteacher Fergus Stewart joined 200 runners on the 5k route, which took them round the school playing fields, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer has affected a number of staff, families in the school and the community and this was a chance for people to show their support.

Dawn Maguire, who is a principal teaching assistant at the school, was diagnosed with cancer last year and has undergone surgery and chemotherapy.

She said: “The realisation of quite how many people are affected with cancer was overwhelming.

"Three million people in the UK are affected by 200 different types of cancer. All monies raised from the race will go to Cancer Research UK.

“We have set a target of £5,000 and are very close to achieving that now.

"The students, staff and parents have been very generous and even those who could not take part have made contributions.

“Many students chose to run with the names of friends or family on their backs. It is only thanks to the incredible support from my family, friends and colleagues that I have remained strong and have had a positive outcome.”
