Shoppers were caught out in Devizes when the heavens opened yesterday afternoon.
Forecast heavy showers on Monday arrived in west Wiltshire, Marlborough and Pewsey, although Devizes remained dry.
But yesterday it was a different story with one woman saying: "It rained for about an hour from about 2pm, but not that hard, so I went out to do some shopping.
"Then there was an absolute deluge, complete with thunder and lightning.
"Quite a few people took shelter in Marks and Spencer but I eventually thought I'd take a chance on walking home and got absolutely drenched.
"I had to pop into the garage at the Castle Hotel and empty the water out of my shoes.
"The garden water butt, which had been almost empty, is now almost three quarters full - pretty good going for one afternoon's rainfall."
