More than 40 varied events across 14 venues have been confirmed for the four weeks of this summer’s Malmesbury Carnival and Festival.

Organisations both in and around Malmesbury shared more than £20,000 raised by last year’s festival and organisers say it is not too late for groups to apply in 2014.

A free carnival and festival guide had been distributed to 8,000 homes to ensure people do not miss the attractions.

Social media is being used to promote events and ticket availability via Malmesbury Carnival on Facebook and @MalmsCarnival on Twitter.

Carnival committee chairman Kate Waterfield said: “We have been working hard to bring in a packed programme for the whole of August. We have many old favourites, plus some exciting new events and performers.

“Whether your interests are musical, theatrical, literary, historical, keeping fit or just having fun, there is something for everyone.”

She added: “The more events people come to, the more money we can raise.”

The festival will include talks, walks, runs, a cycle ride, kite flying, quiz nights and an open gardens day.

It will culminate with the traditional carnival procession around Malmesbury on Sunday, August 31.

The carnival’s origins are thought to date back 90 years. From old photos, organisers know there has been some form of pageant or parade since at least the 1930s. The present format has existed since the 1950s. Historian Bob Browning has produced a book about the carnival, drawing on the memories of those who have taken part. It will be available at this year’s event.
