New Wiltshire fire boss to address meeting

This Is Wiltshire: Councillor Graham Payne Councillor Graham Payne

The new chairman of the Wiltshire and Swindon Fire Authority will address Wiltshire Council next week, ahead of an expected row over the proposed service merger.

Councillor Chris Devine will deliver a presentation on Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to the full council meeting on Tuesday.

Plans to merge the authority with Dorset Fire and Rescue Service as part of a major cost-cutting exercise have recently been thrown into doubt, after north Wiltshire MP James Gray cast doubt on the idea, expressing concerns over emergency response times.

It was disputed by Trowbridge councillor Graham Payne, who resigned as authority chairman last month, claiming he had lost support of the board. The meeting is at County Hall at 10.45am.

Yet another loony idea from our councillors. I am sure the residents of Dorset can't wait to have their calls answered in Devizes.
Is this anything to do with the clowns who built the 'joint control centre' and then did not use it. Are they going to waste another few million trying to justify poor decision making. These people are fond of making every one else provide value for money - and then waste huge sums because it's about the tory obsession with dismantling services.
The madness has to stop.

It's ironic that a conservative MP is expressing concerns over the proposed merger between the fire service in Dorset and Wiltshire, after all they are only responding to the public sector cuts imposed by his coalition Government. Millions in savings have to be found by both authorities and this merger does, on the face of it, sound to be a good proposal. Wiltshire and Dorset are both similar size counties, mostly rural and therefore have similar risks. I feel that this proposal does help keep the fire service local.

Devon and Somerset merged some years ago and I doubt that the public have noticed much difference.
