A SUMMER of sporting activities is taking place in Wharf Green to mark the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow.

On Tuesday night, the screen overlooking the area showed the glitzy opening ceremony which took place at Celtic Park, in the Scottish city.

Yesterday, people of all ages could try their hand at golf, in a session run by Broome Manor Golf Club, and an athletics workshop, which was taken by Swindon Harriers.

Every day until Saturday, August 2 there will be a range of sports events taking place at Wharf Green, aiming to get Swindon active over the summer months.

The programme has been organised by Swindon Council, Swindon Sports Forum and inSwindon.

Kirsty Heber-Smith, events co-ordinator with inSwindon, said: “It has been great so far. The golf sessions have proved to be really popular and we hope the events will help create a real feel-good spirit to coincide with the Commonwealth Games. I think it is also a good touch that’ll we’ll be screening the coverage of the events in Scotland on our big screen as it’ll help make a good atmosphere – especially when the Brits are competing.

“It would be great to have the crowd cheering on our stars on the screen while they hopefully inspire future Swindon sportsmen and women.”

Activities taking place across the programme include football, rugby, netball and American football with clubs from across the town hosting the sessions.

Kirsty said: “The basketball and wheelchair basketball which we are holding on Saturday is probably my favourite of all the things we have lined up as it is good fun. Participants who get in the chairs get a really interesting perspective and it is much harder than what people might think.”

Organisers believe that the programme offers something for everyone.

“There is lots and lots going on for people to try,” said Kirsty.

“We hope that by taking part in something that they might not usually do people will be inclined to find out more about some of the clubs and join them.”
