The Wadworth shire horses will be going on their annual holidays tomorrow.

This year there is just the two of them, Max and Monty, as the third horse, Prince, was retired by the Devizes brewery earlier this year.

Max, 11, and Monty, ten, will be at the Raven Inn, Poulshot, at noon where they will be given a pint or two of Wadworth ale to drink and have their photos taken with spectators before they walk down to the field, where they will be let off their reins.

They will spend just over two weeks in the Poulshot countryside before returning to the brewery on August 26.

The event has grown over the years and Raven Inn landlord Jerry Edwards estimates that last year 1,000 people attended. The pub will be hosting events throughout the weekend in a marquee.

He said: “The shire horses are pretty awesome, it’s nice to see them and all the people that come along to support them.”

Fantasy Radio will be broadcasting live, there will be a barbecue and at 1.30pm there will be a clown show. In the evening, Pete Lamb and the Heartbeats will be playing and Mr Edwards and his wife, Nathalie, will be serving up food on a deep south theme.

On Saturday there will be a Caribbean theme with the food on offer including curried goat and jerk chicken and Trowbridge band Train to Skaville will be playing live. Mr Edwards will fill in for the drummer, who is not able to be there.

On Sunday at 4pm the pub will serve cream teas and Serenade will play swing.
